Rolls-Royce has introduced a one-of-a-kind Spectre - the Lunaflair.
A bespoke commission created for a prominent US client, this vehicle showcases the brand’s dedication to artistry and engineering.
The Spectre Lunaflair’s defining feature is its unique holographic paint finish, inspired by the optical phenomenon known as a lunar halo.
A lunar halo captured in paint
The Spectre Lunaflair’s concept draws on the mesmerising image of a lunar halo – a technicolour ring of light that occurs when moonlight refracts through ice crystals in high-altitude cirrus clouds.
This remarkable phenomenon, resembling the light play of a diamond, is captured through an entirely bespoke holographic paint finish. According to Rolls-Royce, it took over a year of development to bring this visionary concept to life.
To achieve the final result, seven layers of lacquer were applied, including an iridescent coat infused with fine flakes of magnesium fluoride and aluminium. These unique components create a deep, metallic effect under low light and burst into a vivid technicolour display in sunlight.
This paint finish is reserved exclusively for the commissioning client, making Spectre Lunaflair a truly one-of-one creation.
Blending bespoke ideas
Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke Collective, responsible for the Spectre Lunaflair’s design, highlighted the “virtuous circle” of creative cross-pollination within their bespoke commissions.
Martina Starke, Head of Bespoke Design at Rolls-Royce, emphasised how ideas often stem from previous commissions, allowing for continuous innovation.
In fact, the Spectre Lunaflair was partially inspired by another bespoke model, the Phantom Syntopia, which featured a dark iridescent finish with colour-shifting properties. The client’s fascination with the Phantom Syntopia’s design led to a request for a lighter, more luminous version.
The Spectre Lunaflair, therefore, is a direct response to this request, combining the lunar halo’s ethereal beauty with cutting-edge paint technology.
Inside, the Spectre Lunaflair continues the lunar theme with a Navy Blue, White, and Peony Pink colour palette.
These hues echo the range of colours visible during a lunar halo and are featured on the seats, doors, and the iconic Starlight Headliner. Even the steering wheel embodies this bespoke approach, showcasing a dual-tone design with a Navy Blue outer and Arctic White inner side.
A singular creation
Rolls-Royce’s ability to weave the natural world’s beauty into their bespoke commissions is, once again, on full display. The Spectre Lunaflair highlights Rolls-Royce’s ability to turn a singular vision into a reality, blending advanced engineering with high art.
As a one-off creation, it remains exclusive to its commissioning client, with the Lunaflair paint finish not to be replicated.
