Title challenger posts approval of new Dunedin drift facility
South Auckland's Nico Reid has given Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium his seal of approval on the second day of action at the first round of the 2016–’17 Demon Energy D1NZ National Drifting Championship.
“Definitely enjoying Forsyth Barr, the whole venue, and everything [D1NZ Managing Director] Brendon White has set up for us,” Reid told driven.co.nz.
“I appreciate all the work they've put into this. I take my hat off to him and his team.”
The new venue, temporarily built upon the Forsyth Barr Stadium field, has received largely positive feedback from competitors; with most discussions centering around grip levels on the slippery concrete surface.
“The closest we've probably had to that would be the Hampton Downs skidpan. But [that's] way slipperier than here,” said Reid.
“I'm actually loving it. I'm not sure if I'm in the under-powered car, things just seem to be clicking. Can't wait to get into the battles.”
Reid and his Evergreen Tyres Nissan Silvia S15 enter this season among the favourites to take the crown, after winning multiple events last season.
The Nissan pilot carries particular confidence as one of a selection of drivers to have competed at the recent World Time Attack Challenge event at Sydney Motorsport Park during the off season against some of the most well-known names in international drifting; including world-renowned Japanese star Daigo Saito.
“During the off season I don't usually do much driving, so getting the invitation to go there kept me in the seat,” said Reid.
“Even though the car didn't last that long over there, some seat time is better than none.
“It definitely boosts your confidence knowing you're capable of taking on the likes of Daigo Saito. Not saying that there's no good drivers here though.
“Back in the day there only used to be four, but now there's 16.”
Qualifying for the series opener is scheduled to take place later today, with Pro Sport and Pro battles to be decided tomorrow evening.
