Land Rover is obviously hoping motoring journalists have long memories and good feelings about the Range Rover Sport. In a teaser drive this month for the upcoming pure-electric Sport at Goodwood in the UK, it repeated a stunt it employed at the launch of the previous (petrol and diesel, of course) Sport in 2013: plotting out a very tight course through the middle of an aircraft.
We weren't there for the most recent event, although we did join in on the 2013 aircraft tour. In either case, it's a novel way to let drivers explore the crawling abilities of a capable 4x4; in the case of the new Sport Electric, also a way of giving media an experience without letting them go too far or too fast in a model that's still in development.
We've known about the full-size Range Rover Electric for a while. Land Rover says it's been "been previewed at a series of curated events over the British Summer Season".
The Sport Electric is the new thing and the company has revealed very little technical detail at this stage, but claims it "will again redefine the luxury electric SUV segment when it arrives later this year."
It' safe to assume the Sport Electric will share much of the full-size model's powertrain and technology. That models gets a massive 118kWh battery with 404kW/850m. The 800-volt architecture allows 350kW recharging.
Land Rover promises "a suite of advanced technologies... amplified by an advanced new chassis tune and audio sound, creating a drive that feels as distinctive as it is visceral, across any terrain".
The Electric will supplement, not replace the combustion-engined Range Rover Sport. Land Rover says it will "complete the powertrain line-up for Range Rover Sport, with a plug-in electric hybrid, mild-hybrid V8 petrol and six-cylinder petrol and diesel offering a suitable option for every client.
