A people mover that leans into the job
Nissan has launched the all-new Elgrand in Japan, giving its long-running luxury people mover a fresh platform, a more technology-focused cabin and a clearer family-first brief.
While Nissan has made no New Zealand announcement for the model, the launch is interesting because the new Elgrand is designed around the sort of real-world jobs that make large people movers attractive in the first place: carrying people, luggage and the assorted electrical clutter that comes with both.
Nissan says the seven-seat cabin can accommodate seven occupants and seven carry-on suitcases. It also gives the Elgrand three 100V AC outlets with a combined 1500W output. That will matter more to some owners than another screen or a marginal styling flourish, particularly on long trips or when the van is standing in for a mobile family base.
Hybrid power and a technology push
The Japanese model uses Nissan's e-Power system with e-4orce all-wheel-drive technology. In Nissan's set-up, the wheels are driven electrically while the petrol engine works as a generator, rather than directly driving the wheels in the usual way. It is a layout aimed at smooth, responsive progress, and it gives Nissan a differentiated alternative to the conventional hybrid systems used by many rivals.
Driver assistance and connected technology are prominent too. Nissan lists its ProPilot suite and NissanConnect services with Google built in, underlining that this is not simply a cosmetic update for an established nameplate.
No NZ commitment yet
Japanese recommended prices start from ¥6,897,000 for the X e-4ORCE and ¥7,579,000 for the G e-4ORCE. Those numbers are for Japan and should not be converted into a local forecast: taxes, equipment and market positioning can change the equation substantially.
For New Zealand families, the all-new Elgrand is therefore one to watch rather than one to order. Its emphasis on space, useful electrical Power and a refined hybrid drive makes a credible case for a modern people mover, if Nissan chooses to bring it here.
