New EVs, hybrids and SUV upgrades on the way.

New EVs, hybrids and SUV upgrades on the way.

Nissan has detailed a sweeping global product plan over the next two years, confirming several key models destined for Oceania - including New Zealand - as it shifts towards a broader mix of electric, hybrid and internal combustion vehicles (ICE).

Following the late-2024 arrival of Nissan's Ariya in local showrooms, the brand's focus now turns to expanding its electrified range, with at least three more major models locked in for the region.

Among them is the third-generation Nissan Leaf, which moves away from its long-running hatchback format and returns as a sleeker, larger crossover SUV

Also confirmed is the Qashqai with Nissan’s new third-generation e-Power hybrid system, and an all-new right-hand drive Patrol, expected to launch here in mid-2026.

Next-gen Nissan Leaf

The all-new Leaf marks a significant shift for the iconic electric vehicle (EV).

Built on the CMF-EV platform (shared with the Ariya), it will feature a more SUV-like silhouette, aerodynamic improvements and a new 3-in-1 electric powertrain aimed at boosting real-world range and refinement.

For the first time, it will offer features like 19-inch alloy wheels and a panoramic glass roof.

Full specifications will be released later this year, but the model is expected to be a key EV offering for New Zealand once it arrives sometime after mid-2025.

e-Power Qashqai on the way

The Qashqai will soon be available with Nissan’s updated e-Power hybrid system. Unlike conventional hybrids, e-Power uses a petrol engine solely to charge the battery, with the wheels driven by an electric motor - delivering an EV-like drive without plug-in charging.

Nissan says the third-generation system offers up to 15% better efficiency at highway speeds, reduced emissions and improved refinement. The Qashqai e-Power is confirmed for the Oceania region in 2026, with local release timing for New Zealand to follow.

New Patrol and one-tonne ute also locked in

A new generation of Nissan Patrol will debut globally in 2026, and Oceania is first in line for the right-hand drive version. Expect major design changes, an upgraded cabin and a fresh powertrain strategy, though final specs remain under wraps.

Also due is an all-new one-tonne ute co-developed with Mitsubishi, set to replace the current Navara. This model will be critical for Nissan’s local commercial lineup and is likely to compete directly with top-sellers like Ranger and Hilux.

What it means for NZ

While the Ariya has already launched locally, Nissan’s next wave of models will expand its electrified footprint significantly.

The new Leaf will fill the gap for buyers after a family-sized EV, while the Qashqai e-Power provides a bridge for those not yet ready to go fully electric. The Patrol and ute refresh will also be closely watched by SUV and tradie buyers.

With model rollouts set to begin across 2025 and 2026, Nissan’s New Zealand lineup is headed for its most comprehensive overhaul in years. Local timing for each model will be announced closer to launch.
