The Nissan Leaf is poised for a radical transformation. The much-anticipated third-generation model of this pioneering electric vehicle (EV) is expected to break cover at the end of 2024, reimagined as a sleek, high-riding SUV. Its transformation is set to redefine the Leaf's identity, moving away from its humble beginnings to a more stylish and contemporary design.

Design revolution

The new Leaf will draw heavily from Nissan's Ariya and the Chill-Out Concept, first introduced in 2021. This design pivot will feature a lower, more streamlined silhouette versus its siblings, the Qashqai and Juke, and will be produced in the same British factory responsible for these models. The aim is clear: to distance the new Leaf from the less desirable aesthetic of its predecessors while embracing a more modern and attractive design language.

Nissan's design team is reportedly determined to avoid the 'awkward proportions' of the first and second-generation Leaf models. This ambition is supported by the new Leaf's shift to the CMF-EV platform, which it will share with the Ariya and Renault Megane E-Tech. This move away from a combustion car platform facilitates a more harmonious design language, free from the constraints of conventional car designs.

The Chill-Out Concept, known for its smooth body panels and minimalistic design lines, serves as a major inspiration for the new Leaf. The concept's front end, dominated by LED lights and an illuminated badge, signals a move towards a more sophisticated and futuristic aesthetic. This new design direction promises to elevate the Leaf from a practical choice to a visually compelling one.

Next-gen driving range

As for what's beneath the surface, the 2026 Leaf will come powered by cutting-edge batteries from Envision, a Chinese firm. These batteries, boasting a 30 per cent increase in energy density, will be produced in a new facility adjacent to Nissan's Sunderland factory. Nissan is hopeful for a significant boost in driving range as it moves closer towards sustainable mobility solutions.

If all goes according to plan, the new Leaf will be revealed by Nissan at the end of next year, going on sale in 2025, presumably as a 2026 model. There's no word yet on whether Nissan New Zealand is interested in bringing this upcoming model to the local market.
