New tech-forward CLA guns for compact luxury.

New tech-forward CLA guns for compact luxury.

Mercedes-Benz has officially lifted the covers off the all-new CLA, a vehicle it claims to be its most intelligent, efficient and emotionally engaging model to date.

As the first entry in a next-generation vehicle family, the CLA integrates a fully electric platform alongside high-tech hybrid powertrains, an all-new operating system with MB.OS and a level of digital personalisation previously unseen in the segment.

A reimagined digital experience

Underpinning the new CLA’s technology suite is MB.OS - a ground-up, in-house software platform that allows deep integration between the vehicle’s hardware, cloud services and AI-driven assistants.

The core of the CLA’s infotainment is the fourth-generation MBUX user experience platform. This system, powered by a perplexing mix of Google Gemini AI and ChatGPT-4o, introduces a multi-turn virtual assistant capable of handling natural conversations and responding to emotions in real-time.

According to Mercedes-Benz, the MBUX interface features a fully customisable “Zero Layer” UI, offering a smartphone-like experience with movable apps, real-time AI suggestions and seamless third-party integration.

The MBUX Superscreen dominates the interior, blending multiple displays behind a single glass panel. Complementing the high-tech cabin is an optional 14-inch passenger display, offering streaming services like Disney+ and cloud gaming via Boosteroid.

800V fast charging with efficient power

The CLA’s fully electric variants bring advanced 800V battery architecture, high-density silicon-oxide anodes and two-speed transmissions for enhanced efficiency.

Two key electric models will be available at launch:

  • CLA 250+ EQ: 200kW, 694 to 792km WLTP range
  • CLA 350 4Matic EQ: 260kW, 672 to 771km WLTP range

The CLA 350 4Matic EQ rockets from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds - matching the previous-gen AMG CLA 45 S. Even the entry-level CLA 250+ EQ delivers brisk performance, making this the fastest standard CLA lineup to date.

Mercedes-Benz claims the CLA 250+ can gain up to 325km of range in just 10 minutes using 320kW DC fast charging, while the MB.Charge network enables advance charging reservations.

The brand is also preparing bidirectional charging (V2G and V2H), to be activated via an over-the-air update post-launch.

For markets not yet ready to commit fully to EVs, Mercedes will introduce hybrid CLA models featuring 48V mild-hybrid technology.

These vehicles will use a new 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder with a Miller-cycle combustion process, integrated with an electric motor in an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Hybrid models can drive on pure electric power at low speeds and utilise energy recuperation across all eight gears.

Aerodynamics and design evolution

The all-new CLA remains true to the fastback silhouette seen in the Concept CLA Class, with aerodynamic refinements to achieve a Cd of 0.21, setting a benchmark in its segment. Its shark-nose front end, complete with an illuminated Mercedes pattern grille, accentuates its aggressive yet streamlined look.

Frameless doors and flush-mounted retractable handles contribute to the car’s minimalist, aerodynamic appeal, while the standard panoramic glass roof enhances cabin ambience and visibility.

Distinctive star-shaped LED headlights and taillights create a signature lighting identity, ensuring the CLA stands out day or night. Functionality has also been improved with a new 101L frunk (front trunk), providing additional storage for small items.

Dimensionally, the CLA has expanded in every direction, measuring 35mm longer, 25mm wider and 29mm taller than its predecessor. The wheelbase has grown by 61mm, delivering improved cabin space. While front headroom and legroom see noticeable gains, rear-seat legroom has been slightly reduced.

Mercedes-Benz has also taken significant steps to reduce the CLA’s environmental impact, claiming a 40% smaller carbon footprint compared to its predecessor.

The CLA is also the first Mercedes model designed from the outset for a circular economy, incorporating bidirectional energy storage for home and grid use.

Smarter, safer driving

Mercedes-Benz is advancing its driver-assist systems under the MB.Drive umbrella, introducing an expanded SAE Level 2+ autonomous driving package in select markets.

This includes features like automatic lane change assist, an enhanced version of radar cruise control with steering assist, real-time 3D surround navigation and an improved auto-parking system with self-exit functionality.

China will be the first market to receive MB.Drive Pro, bringing urban autonomous driving features by 2025, with North America following in 2026.

All-new Mercedes-Benz CLA launch

The all-new CLA positions itself quite favourably as a pioneer in smart driving, electrification and efficiency. Its Google- and ChatGPT-powered AI, ultra-fast charging and competitive range introduce a new dimension to premium compact vehicles.

The CLA will undoubtedly square off against Tesla, Polestar, BMW, Audi and even Hyundai, but whether Mercedes has done enough to distinguish itself remains to be seen.

And while some may lament the lack of a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant, the CLA's technical prowess and future-ready architecture suggest it will stay relevant for years to come.

Stay tuned for New Zealand launch details.
