Xiaomi has officially lifted the curtain on its second EV (after the SU7) and its first-ever electric SUV, the YU7, now on sale in China with a starting price of RMB 253,500 (under NZ$60,000) as it targets Tesla and its bestselling Model Y.
Available in Standard (RWD), Pro (AWD), and Max (high-performance AWD) variants, the YU7 promises to shake up the luxury EV-SUV segment with a heady mix of power, tech and design.
At its peak, the Max version serves up 288kW and 528Nm, launching from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.23 seconds - or a searing 2.98 seconds with rollout factored in.
Big range, big comfort, big tech
The YU7’s credentials go beyond straight-line thrills. Xiaomi claims a class-leading 835km CLTC range for the Standard model, with AWD variants achieving up to 770km.
All benefit from an 800V silicon carbide platform that enables charging from 10 to 80% in just 12 minutes, or 620km of range in 15 minutes.
Inside, the YU7 blends style and substance. Buyers can pair nine body colours with four interior schemes, including the bold new Ash Grey & Iris Purple dual-tone option. The cabin’s 17m² of Oeoko-Tex soft-touch materials and Nappa leather seats signal genuine luxury.
Those seats? The fronts can be had with zero-gravity recline and massage, while the rears offer 135-degree reclining and heating - plus they fold flat to form a 1.8m bed.
Handling, safety and smarts
Underpinning the YU7 is a premium chassis package: double wishbones up front, five-link rear, dual-chamber air springs, adaptive dampers and Brembo four-piston callipers. Xiaomi Smart Chassis tech reads the road ahead to soften the blow of speed bumps and uneven surfaces.
Meanwhile, the Motion Sickness Relief mode - developed with medical experts - fine-tunes chassis behaviour to smooth pitch and roll, reportedly cutting sickness rates by 51%.
On the safety front, Xiaomi’s armour includes a steel-aluminium hybrid body, ultra-high strength steel in key zones and battery protection that exceeds China’s latest standards. Extensive road testing of 6.49 million km across brutal conditions from -41°C to 53°C backs the claims.
The YU7’s assisted driving suite is equally serious: powered by Nvidia Drive AGX Thor chips with 700 TOPS computing, it combines LiDAR, 11 HD cameras and a raft of sensors for smart, human-like assistance.
A luxurious gadget on wheels
True to Xiaomi’s tech roots, the YU7 offers a triple Mini LED panoramic display, a 25-speaker Dolby Atmos audio system, voice-controlled glove box, 80W wireless charging pads, a smart fridge and even animated virtual pets in the infotainment.
Apple users aren’t left out either with CarPlay, Apple Music, Apple Watch control and UWB remote unlocking all supported.
Pre-orders are now live in China, with Xiaomi reporting nearly 300,000 customers within an hour of launch. DRIVEN Car Guide understands Xiaomi has not disclosed international rollout details at this stage. Given the spec sheet, however, it may be a car worth waiting for.
