For a lot of drivers, the moments following a vehicle collision are defined by adrenaline and confusion rather than calm logic. To address this, Auckland-based specialist insurer Star Insure has launched a new mobile application designed to act as a real-time "pocket safety net" for all Kiwi motorists.
The company says the aim of the new tool is to eliminate the stress of an accident scene by providing a clear, step-by-step guide on the necessary actions to take immediately following a light scuff or a more serious collision.
The application works by leading the driver through a structured sequence of checks to ensure nothing important is overlooked while emotions are running high. Beyond providing instructions, the app features a built-in capture tool that allows users to easily record third-party contact information, log essential data, and snap photos of the scene before leaving the roadside.
According to Star Insure CEO Roger Wallace, the goal is to bring clarity and structure to the confusion of an accident, ensuring that motorists capture the exact details required to make later recall - and the subsequent insurance claims process - as easy as possible.
"When you have just been in a ding or a serious collision, your adrenaline is pumping. Remembering what details to swap or what photos to take is tough," said Wallace.
"This app brings calm and clarity to the chaos, ensuring you capture exactly what you need to make the claims process completely hassle-free.”
Star Insure has made the app is entirely free and available to every motorist on New Zealand roads, regardless of whether they are a customer. Gabrielle Byfield, General Manager of Marketing and Communications, says that this initiative is part of a broader, proactive approach to community safety by the company.
“Our dedication to safety does not stop at the scene of an accident; we are deeply committed to preventing them in the first place," she said.
"Through our association with the Street Smart programme, we are equipping young drivers with practical, hands-on skills. Now, with this free app, we are giving them - and their families - an extra layer of reassurance should the unexpected happen."
The app is currently available for download on both the Apple App Store and Google Play.
