MG Motor New Zealand has announced that the MG4 EV Urban will be available for customer test drives at dealerships nationwide starting May 1. The EV Urban is priced at $38,990 plus on-road costs, positioning it as the most affordable electric option in MG’s current New Zealand lineup.
The MG4 EV Urban utilises a 6-in-1 electric drive system built on a front-wheel-drive architecture. According to MG, this integrated design, combined with a re-engineered torsion bar rear suspension, contributes to a 20 percent increase in passenger and luggage space compared to the standard MG4. To assist with performance in varying climates, the EV Urban is equipped with a heat pump designed to maintain electrical system efficiency.
Technical specifications for the model include a 54kWh battery and compatibility with 150 kW DC fast charging, which allows the battery to charge from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 30 minutes. The interior is designed to accommodate four adults and includes the MG Pilot suite of driver assistance features.
MG says the MG4 EV Urban's mechanical layout is specifically intended for urban use, featuring a design that enables a tighter turning circle for navigating city streets, while it also comes with MG's 10-year warranty.
“The MG4 has been a strong performer in New Zealand and the UK, showing there’s real demand for practical, affordable EVs, and the MG4 EV Urban builds on this by giving even more local drivers a way into electric mobility," said Dean Sheed, Country Business Manager for MG Motor New Zealand.
"Given current world events and skyrocketing local fuel prices, we are seeing a new cohort of motivated drivers wanting to explore what an EV could look like in their life."
At the local launch of the MG4 EV Urban, Sheed also confirmed that the MGS6 SUV is set to join its smaller MGS5 sibling in New Zealand before the end of the year, while also suggesting that the U9 EV electric ute was also under consideration.
