Mercedes-Benz claims its first-ever pure-electric C-Class is also the sportiest version in the nameplate's history - even if you might not guess it by looking.

Familiar C-Class styling, but the EV is an all-new model.

The German maker has stated that its future EVs will look more like its petrol models, and the C-Class is clear evidence of that. It looks quite similar to the combustion-engine C-Class sedan, which will continue alongside the new car and receive styling updates to bring the two even closer together.

But underneath, the C-Class EV is crammed with high-tech. The launch model will be the C 400 4Matic, with 360kW, a 94kWh battery, dual motors, 0-100km/h in 4.0 seconds and a range of 762km. With 800-volt architecture, Mercedes-Benz claims over 300km of range can be added with a 10-minute charge.

Future models will include a rear-drive version with over 800km range.

Touch of coupe and GT style at the rear, claims the company.

The company claims the new model will be as smooth as an S-Class on long trips, with rear-axle steering, and Airmatic suspension with predictive damping based on car-to-X and Google Maps data.

The electric drive unit features a permanently excited synchronous motor (PSM) on the rear axle. A two-speed transmission is fitted to the rear axle to "combine high efficiency with strong performance."

On the dual-motor models, the PSM on the front axle functions as a “boost” drive. Depending on the driving situation and driving programme, it is activated via a disconnect unit (DCU), for example when a corresponding power requirement or traction is needed. Under low load, the electric motor is instantly decoupled for greater efficiency and remains stationary. This reduces losses on the front axle by up to 90% and increases range.

C-Class sparkles inside and out

The exterior styling features a version of the iconic Mercedes-Benz grille with 1050 illuminated dots, and what the company calls a "coupe-like silhouette" and "expressive GT rear".

It's all about the lights. Many, many lights.

The EV platform (shared with the GLC EV) allows a long wheelbase: at 2962mm, it's 97mm longer than the combustion C-Class.

Inside, the new MBUX Hyperscreen (optional) extends across the entire width of the interior. With a screen size of 99.3cm (39.1in), it's intended to "create an exceptionally immersive sense of space".

Two versions of the Hyperscreen will be available.

Another option is the MBUX Superscreen that combines three screens under a large, continuous glass surface. Both MBUX screens are controlled by high-performance chips and real-time graphics from Unity Game Engine. The front passenger screens feature a camera-based blocking function to minimise distraction for the driver, while the front passenger retains full functionality and an interactive user experience. The Dual Light Control (DLC) technology developed by Mercedes-Benz can be activated or deactivated.

The fourth generation of MBUX is the first in-car infotainment system to combine artificial intelligence (AI) from ChatGPT4o and Microsoft Bing as well as Google Gemini. Mercedes-Benz claims it "revolutionises the relationship between the vehicle and the driver".

The virtual assistant can conduct complex, multi-part conversations and has a short term memory. As a “living” avatar, it is always present on the MBUX top layer.

First carmaker with vegan certified interior

The interior is certified by the independent organisation The Vegan Society.

First introduced in the GLC, the Vegan Package includes all soft-touch surface materials from the seat upholstery and the headliner to the pillars, door panels and carpeting. Mercedes-Benz claims it's the first car manufacturer in the world to offer an independently certified vegan interior.

The C-Class EV is expected to go on sale in global markets in 2027.
