After pulling the pin on returning to America this year, you'd think that ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett's 2017 would be a bit of a kick-back affair.
But, over the last two days he's been at the centre of two international motorsport announcements.
Yesterday it was the confirmation that he would compete at this weekend's Phillip Island 500 Australian GT Endurance event with Tony Quinn. And today it's the news that he will return to the iconic Goodwood Festival of Speed event in England.
The Festival, or 'FOS' if you're that way inclined, has morphed from a largely historic-based hill climb up Lord March's glorious driveway into an all-in motorsport extravaganza. And the newest entrant to this world are drifters.
Whiddett wasn't the first drifter to take on Goodwood, but he was arguably the one that breathed life and acceptance into the notion of drift cars appearing at the event when he debuted in 2014 and ... sort of stole the show. You can just tell, watching the clip above, that the commentators are flabbergasted by the whole thing.
He's since been one of the main invitees at Goodwood, attending in 2015 and 2016.
Things will be a bit different in 2017, however, as he will compete in RADBUL for the first time — his Formula Drift MX-5. He'll be joined by a raft of drifting's big names, including America's Vaughn Gittin Jr, and Ireland's James Deane.
And instead of them simply running up the hill against the clock, they'll all compete against one another to decide on a victor. This will be judged on how quick they fly through a speed trap, as well as fan voting.
Among the other main Goodwood draw cards are a raft of current and former World Rally Championship machines — attending to help celebrate 20 years of WRC regulations.
FOS kicks off on Thursday the 29th of June, going for three days until July the 2nd.
