Japanese restoration specialists Built by Legends have revealed a compelling restomod of the iconic Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R.
The latest rendition of this legendary vehicle retains its unmistakable R34 character, enhanced by a host of technical upgrades and dressed in the revered Bayside Blue paintwork.
Enhanced performance
Under the bonnet lies the masterpiece - a modified MINE's MB7 engine, which takes the classic RB26's twin-turbo straight-six to new heights.
Expanded to 2.8 litres, this powerhouse churns out an impressive 485kW, seamlessly paired with a Getrag six-speed manual transmission.
The precision engineering is evident, with a carbon fibre air intake and a custom ECU enhancing airflow and efficiency. Such tweaks give this GT-R both the raw power and control to rival modern supercars while paying homage to its heritage.
While the original R34 GT-R is still a performance marvel, its braking and suspension systems get a much-needed upgrade here.
Built by Legends installed AP Racing six-piston callipers at the front with 356 mm rotors, complemented by four-piston rear callipers to deliver stopping power that matches its enhanced speed.
A full overhaul of the suspension system, along with the installation of all-new bushings and bearings, brings the R34’s handling and stability firmly into the modern era.
Next-level craftsmanship
The entire car underwent a thorough restoration process, starting with a complete chassis strip-down by the renowned Garage Yoshida.
The frame is fortified with new strut towers and reinforced through spot welding and wet blasting, ensuring the car can handle the increased demands of the modernised engine and suspension.
This rigorous approach creates a foundation that combines the structural integrity of a brand-new car with the timeless design of the original R34.
Interior refinement
The R34’s interior matches the sleek exterior aesthetic, featuring two-tone black and navy Ultrasuede across the seats and interior panels.
The steering wheel, wrapped in Alcantara and Nappa leather, offers a tactile feel that enhances the driving experience, while aluminium pedals provide a sleek, performance-focused finish. These upgrades maintain the car’s original DNA while bringing a contemporary luxury touch.
A Skyline dream at a steep price
For enthusiasts eager to own this reimagined R34 GT-R, the investment starts at US$450,000 (around NZ$750,000) - excluding the cost of a donor car.
Built by Legends has ensured that every detail reflects a commitment to quality and reverence for the GT-R lineage. While this price may seem steep, it highlights the car’s enduring appeal and the painstaking effort involved in crafting each unique model.
