The roof that changed the formula
The SL 500 made its world premiere on 31 July 2001, bringing an electrohydraulic vario-roof that switched the car between coupé and roadster forms. Its neatly timed operation concealed considerable complexity: 11 hydraulic cylinders and 17 limit switches were required to complete the process.

That folding hardtop changed the R230's basic proposition. Instead of treating the fixed-roof and open-air configurations as separate ideas, Mercedes-Benz packaged both into the same SL and made the change a brief part of the journey.

The engineering advances extended beneath and around the roof. Mercedes-Benz made the body 20% more torsionally rigid than the preceding R129, while also reducing the drag coefficient from 0.32 to 0.29. The result was a structurally stiffer shape that also presented less aerodynamic resistance than its predecessor.
From SL 500 to Black Series
Performance figures showed just how widely the R230 formula could stretch. The SL 500 arrived with a 5.0-litre V8 producing 225kW. The SL 55 AMG raised output to 350kW, before the later SL 65 AMG Black Series pushed the figure to 493kW.

Those numbers trace a clear path from the V8-powered SL 500 to the most powerful R230 derivative, without changing the model's core roof concept. The same generation could therefore span a substantial range of outputs while retaining its 16-second coupé-to-roadster transformation.
A decade in Bremen
