The 600,000th Mercedes-Benz G-Class has rolled off the line in Graz, Austria, this time with a battery instead of a V8 growl.
The milestone model, a G 580 with EQ Technology finished in obsidian black metallic, marks a new chapter for the off-road icon that's been defying convention since 1979.
Mercedes' latest electrified G comes with a claimed combined energy consumption of 30.3–27.7kWh/100km and zero tailpipe emissions. It’s also rated in CO₂ class A under the WLTP standard - a reminder that even the brawniest off-roaders are being reimagined for the electric age.
Boxy, bold, and built to last

The G-Class hasn’t strayed far from its roots. Originally launched with engines ranging from 53kW to 110kW, the G started life as a rugged, go-anywhere vehicle and remains instantly recognisable today. Signature design cues like round headlights, a side-hinged tailgate, and that iconic boxy silhouette continue to define the model more than four decades on.
Underneath, it's still serious kit: a robust ladder frame, all-wheel drive, and triple differential locks have been standard since day one. That blend of old-school capability and new-age luxury is what’s fuelled the G’s cult following.
More than metal

And it’s not just about performance. Since 2019, Mercedes' Manufaktur program has made the G-Class one of the brand’s most customisable offerings. Today, more than 90% of buyers opt for bespoke touches - on average, three per car. That includes heritage colours and paint options inspired by G-Class legends of the past. As of 2024, the catalogue has exploded to over 20,000 shades.
Mercedes isn’t slowing down, either. “The G-Class remains true to its tradition and continues to set standards in design and off-road capability,” the company states - signalling more low-volume specials and heritage-inspired editions to come.
For those keeping track, the Edition Stronger Than the 1980s was a recent nod to the W460 series, the boxy brute that won over drivers in the disco decade.
Turns out, even electric power can’t dim the glow of an off-road legend. After all these years, the G-Wagen is still charging ahead.
