The final tyres have rolled off the production line at Cooper Tires, formerly known as Avon Tyres, in England's Melksham.

This event marked the end of an incredible 112-year journey of tyre production in the town of about 18,000 residents.

The closure, which occurred in mid-December of last year, concludes a chapter that's been integral to Melksham's industrial and community life.

A legacy in motorsport

The history of Avon Tyres is inseparable from the world of motorsport, a legacy that adds to the significance of the Melksham factory's closure.

Founded in 1904, Avon quickly made a name for itself in the auto industry, especially in racing.

Known for their reliability and performance, Avon tyres became a staple in various motorsport categories, including Formula One, where they supplied tyres from the late 1950s to the early 1980s.

This involvement not only enhanced Avon's reputation for high-quality tyres but also forged a strong connection with the motorsport community.

The brand's impact extended to motorcycle racing and touring car championships, further embedding itself in motorsport history.

The decision to close

The closure follows the October 2022 announcement by Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, Europe, citing competitiveness concerns as the primary reason for shutting down the Melksham site.

This decision has impacted 350 employees, many of whom have deep-rooted connections with the factory. The factory's role in the community extends beyond employment, symbolizing generations of familial and social bonds within Melksham.

Amidst the bittersweet atmosphere, Alan Yates, a long-standing employee, played a pivotal role in the factory's final hours.

As a mould changer, he 'cured' the last tyres, including one for a 1950s vintage motorbike.

While his colleagues finalized their contracts, Alan continued the production process, inadvertently becoming the craftsman of the factory's last tyre.

Reflecting on his 19 years of service, he shared his mixed emotions, from pride in his work to sadness over the closure and its impact on the community.

“I said, I might as well keep the last few tyres going through and it just so happens, they didn’t get back until I was putting the last tyre in,” he shared with The Melksham Independent News. “It’s quite weird really, quite an historical moment.”

The factory's closure has deeply affected the Melksham community, which has seen generations of families working within its walls.

Future of the Melksham site

As the factory ceases operations, some staff members will remain to oversee the winding down of the facility until the summer of this year.

The site's future is a subject of much speculation and interest, with local consultations underway to determine its redevelopment.

These discussions form a crucial part of the town's Neighbourhood Plan, offering the local community a chance to influence Melksham's future.
