Tiny hatch, huge hybrid range.

  • BYD's Dolphin G DM-i brings plug-in hybrid tech to small-hatchback segment.
  • New DM 5.0 system targets efficiency through powertrain, thermal and electrical upgrades.
  • BYD has not disclosed any New Zealand launch plan for the model.

BYD has given its new Dolphin G DM-i a second headline, confirming that the European-market small hatchback will introduce the brand's latest DM 5.0 Super Hybrid technology.

The Dolphin G DM-i was revealed earlier in June as a plug-in hybrid entry in Europe's B-segment, a part of the market usually dominated by petrol, mild-hybrid or full-hybrid hatchbacks.

BYD says the model can travel up to about 105km on electric power alone, and up to about 1040km with a full battery and tank.

The company also quotes weighted fuel consumption of 201.7mpg, equal to about 1.4 litres per 100km. As always with plug-in hybrids, real-world efficiency will depend heavily on how often owners charge the battery.

A small BYD with a big range claim

BYD says the fifth-generation system improves three main areas: powertrain, thermal management and electrical integration. The company has not disclosed all of the European specifications in the media release, but it says the Dolphin G DM-i uses its Super Hybrid with DM technology to deliver an EV-style drive for daily use, backed by petrol-electric flexibility for longer trips.

BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li said: "We never stop innovating at BYD, and the debut of DM 5.0 shows how this commitment extends to even our more compact models."

She added that the car's combination of compact packaging, efficiency and long-range flexibility is "born to disrupt".

Market availability

BYD Dolphin G DM-i

The Dolphin G DM-i is described as the first BYD designed and developed for Europe. BYD has not announced New Zealand timing, pricing or local specification for the model.

Still, the idea is relevant here. BYD already sells plug-in hybrid SUVs and utes in New Zealand, while rival Chinese brands have made "super hybrid" technology a major sales pitch. A compact BYD hatch with plug-in range and long-distance petrol-electric backup would sit in a different space from the pure-electric Dolphin and Atto 1.

For now, it remains a European reveal rather than a confirmed local model. But it shows BYD is pushing its long-range hybrid formula down into smaller, potentially more affordable cars.
