- BMW's Munich plant has begun pre-series production of the new i3.
- The facility now manufactures vehicles through all production stages on-site.
- Training using augmented reality and real-world machinery ensures seamless operations.
BMW has reached a crucial milestone: the first pre-series vehicles for the new i3 Neue Klasse electric sedan are now rolling off its assembly line.
This marks the beginning of the final preparation phase before series production launches in the second half of 2026. The new i3 is only the second model in the Neue Klasse family, following the iX3 SUV.
From test bench to factory floor

What's significant here is the scope of integration. Until recently, early i3 prototypes were assembled at BMW's nearby Research and Innovation Centre in collaboration with the pilot plant.
Now, the complete production process has moved to Plant Munich itself: every step, from the modernised press shop through the new body shop, state-of-the-art paint facility, and new assembly area, is happening on site.
This shift is critical. "For the first time, we have built a BMW i3 entirely at our plant using state-of-the-art manufacturing technology and digitally connected processes," says Peter Weber, Head of BMW Group Plant Munich. The pre-series phase allows engineers to stress-test every logistics system, piece of equipment, and integrated digital workflow under real-world conditions before ramping up to full volume.
Getting the details right

During this phase, parts flow through designated material streams and follow the production line exactly as they will during series manufacturing. Each component and production step is scrutinised closely, with particular attention to approval inspections for cutting-edge equipment and its digital integration with existing systems.
Simultaneously, BMW is putting its workforce through intensive training. Early sessions used augmented reality; now, technicians are learning on the actual new machinery and installations. BMW says this dual approach of process refinement and human preparation is essential for a smooth series launch.
The premium EV reckoning
As Toyota and Chinese manufacturers like BYD dominate the mid-market EV space, premium brands are pivoting hard to prove they can deliver electric vehicles without compromising luxury, technology, or manufacturing precision. The Munich pre-series run is BMW's final rehearsal before that stakes get real.
