Alpine’s upcoming A390, the brand's first fully electric sport fastback, is nearing launch following rigorous winter tests in Lapland, Sweden, near the Arctic Circle.
This rigorous testing is crucial for fine-tuning Alpine's new technologies under extreme cold conditions.
Arctic Circle testing
Engineers focused heavily on optimising Alpine's active torque vectoring system and introducing a new Track mode.
The challenging conditions provided valuable data to ensure that the A390 maintains Alpine’s performance standards, particularly regarding agility and dynamic driving precision.
The aim was to balance sporty dynamics with an intuitive, progressive feel suitable for everyday driving.
Extreme cold testing also validated the repeatability and reliability crucial for electric performance.
Alpine highlighted the importance of predictable, consistent power delivery, essential for driver confidence in an electric sports vehicle.
Unique fastback offers dual personality
The A390 stands apart by combining sports car performance with the practicality of a full-fledged five-seater. This dual character makes the model versatile enough for daily driving and spirited sessions at the track.
The A390 measures 4615 mm long, 1885 mm wide, and 1532 mm high, providing ample interior space and practicality.
A definitive front lighting signature, inspired by the A390_β show car, includes distinctive illuminated triangular clusters named 'Cosmic Dust', echoing the styling cues of the Alpenglow concept.
Aerodynamics haven't been overlooked. A micro-perforated front grille guides airflow efficiently, complemented by distinctive side scoops that enhance aerodynamic stability and a sleek, subtle rear spoiler designed for optimal balance.
Advanced powertrain
Underpinning the A390 is the modular AmpR Medium platform, shared with models like the Renault Scenic E-Tech Electric and Nissan Ariya.
The A390 is equipped with a tri-motor setup - one motor on the front axle and two on the rear - delivering all-wheel-drive capabilities and advanced torque vectoring for superior handling.
While exact power figures are pending, it's anticipated to produce around 260kW, aligning with Alpine's performance benchmarks.
Enhanced driving dynamics
Inside, the A390 features a sport-oriented cockpit. The multifunctional steering wheel - derived from Alpine’s motorsport heritage - includes dedicated buttons for Overtake (OV), Recharge (RCH) and a direct-access drive mode selector.
The newly introduced 'Track Mode' delivers even sharper responses tailored to enthusiasts seeking maximum performance.
Alpine A390 EV launch
Entirely designed and manufactured in France, the A390 showcases French engineering at Alpine's historic Dieppe facility, with the Renault factory in Cléon contributing to production.
The electric fastback will debut officially during Alpine’s 70th-anniversary celebrations in Dieppe, France, on May 27.
With these final tests nearing completion, the Alpine A390 promises to deliver an electrifying driving experience in a rapidly evolving electric sports car market.
