Third-gen Leaf adds SUV styling, better handling and fast charging.

  • Third-gen Nissan Leaf offers 52kWh/75 kWh battery options with up to 160kW/600km range.
  • New features include dual 14.3-inch screens, ProPilot driver assist and 150kW fast charging.
  • CMF-EV platform gives Leaf a flatter floor, multi-link rear suspension and improved turning radius.

The all-new, third-generation Nissan Leaf has been officially revealed. Reimagined from the ground up as a family-friendly electric SUV, the Leaf has matured into a more powerful, roomier and tech-laden electric contender that aims to woo both EV newbies and curious ICE converts.

More range, less compromise

Available with two battery options (52kWh and 75kWh) the latest Leaf delivers 130kW and 160kW of power respectively, with torque outputs of 345Nm and 355Nm.

Nissan claims the larger pack supports a range of over 600km in Japan/Europe, though ANZ-specific figures are still pending.

Both batteries are liquid-cooled and feature thermal conditioning, with navigation-linked controls that optimise battery behaviour en route.

Built on the CMF-EV platform, the new Leaf boasts a multi-link rear suspension, improved body rigidity, and a tighter turning radius despite offering up to 19-inch wheels.

A new 3-in-1 powertrain (motor, inverter, reducer) is now 10% smaller yet quieter - thanks in part to a high-rigidity mount and more insulation.

Beauty, brains and a boot-load of tech

Inside, the flat-floor cabin gets a serene, near-minimalist layout with up to dual 14.3-inch screens and Google built-in.

Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, ambient lighting and optional Bose headrest speakers round out the digital creature comforts. Boot space is rated at 420L (437L in Europe), with roof rails and a hands-free liftgate on select variants.

Driver assist tech is also dialled up with Nissan’s ProPilot, a 3D Intelligent Around View Monitor and an “invisible hood” view to peek around obstacles. It even includes Intelligent Route Planning to suggest charging stops based on traffic and battery status.

The Nissan Leaf now supports up to 150kW DC fast charging, capable of juicing 10 to 80% in about 35 minutes.

Beyond driving, the Leaf's Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability means it can power gadgets via 120V outlets in the cabin and boot - ideal for camping or blackouts.

European models add future-ready Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) support, while Japanese-spec models retain Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) for home backup integration.

The new Nissan Leaf will be built in Japan and the UK, with rollout schedules - and New Zealand pricing - set to be revealed closer to launch. Watch this space. In the meantime, Nissan's Ariya electric SUV remains available in NZ.
