Honda has officially announced the return of its iconic Prelude, a sporty two-door coupe, set to debut in the US in late 2025.

Reviving a model that last graced production lines in 2001, the new Prelude aims to balance nostalgia with innovation, sporting a two-motor hybrid-electric powertrain and an all-new S+ Shift mode for a simulated yet engaging driving experience.

The 2026 Prelude will feature Honda’s familiar e:HEV hybrid system, which combines a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with dual electric motors.

As seen in models like the Civic and CR-V hybrids, this system eliminates the need for a conventional transmission, instead utilising a clutch to manage the engine’s connection to the wheels.

The new Prelude will likely share its platform with Honda’s current lineup, including the Civic and CR-V, but with a more dynamic chassis setup to complement its sporty design.

Honda’s intent to position the Prelude as a stylish alternative to crossover SUVs and sedans signals its commitment to maintaining variety in its portfolio.

The standout feature of the Prelude’s drivetrain is the S+ Shift mode, an evolution of Honda’s Linear Shift Control technology.

According to Honda, this mode enhances driver engagement by "finely controlling engine RPM across all acceleration and deceleration ranges."

The result? Sharper simulated gear shifts, synchronised with active sound control for a more visceral experience.

A Honda spokesperson explained to Carscoops that S+ Shift "stimulates the body and mind" through coordinated auditory and visual feedback, making the Prelude more interactive despite lacking a traditional manual gearbox. While the system won’t replicate a full manual experience, it promises a more tactile connection than standard hybrid setups.

First introduced in 1978, the Prelude became a symbol of Honda’s engineering prowess before being retired after five generations.

The 2026 model aims to bridge that heritage with modern sensibilities, offering a two-door coupe for enthusiasts in a market increasingly dominated by SUVs and electric vehicles.

Honda has confirmed the Prelude will launch in the United States in late 2025, with European markets - including right-hand-drive regions such as the United Kingdom - following in early 2026.

While Honda hasn’t yet announced availability for New Zealand, the right-hand-drive UK launch suggests the model could make its way here as part of Honda’s global rollout.

Alongside the Prelude, Honda plans to expand its EV lineup, including the GM-based Prologue SUV and the radical Honda 0 Series, set to debut globally by 2030.
