Volvo’s rugged Cross Country lineup goes electric.

Volvo’s rugged Cross Country lineup goes electric.

Volvo is expanding its off-road-oriented Cross Country range, but this time on an electric note.

The new 2026 Volvo EX30 Cross Country marks the first time the Swedish automaker has applied its all-terrain enhancements to a battery-powered vehicle. It is is also the first in a barrage of vehicles Volvo Cars is planning to roll out in 2025.

With standard all-wheel drive, increased ground clearance, skid plates and an option for all-terrain tyres, the EX30 Cross Country is designed to handle tougher conditions without sacrificing the benefits of an electric vehicle (EV).

A familiar off-road formula, now electrified

Volvo’s Cross Country badge has traditionally been reserved for station wagons such as the V60 and V90 Cross Country, blending rugged capability with everyday practicality.

While past experiments with the S60 and V40 Cross Country variants saw mixed success, the EX30 CC brings the formula into the electric era.

Under the skin, the EX30 Cross Country retains the same dual-motor powertrain found in the standard EX30 Twin Motor Performance. This setup delivers 315kW and 542Nm of torque, drawing energy from a 64.0kWh battery pack.

Volvo estimates a range of 425km on a full charge, and when plugged into a DC fast charger, the battery can be replenished from 10 to 80% in just 26 minutes.

While the drivetrain remains unchanged, Volvo has reworked the chassis to enhance off-road performance. Ground clearance has been raised by 18 mm, giving the EX30 CC better approach and departure angles.

Protective skid plates have been added at both ends, shielding vital components from rough terrain, while flared wheel arches and exclusive 18-inch wheels enhance the SUV’s rugged aesthetic. Buyers can also opt for all-terrain tyres to further improve grip on loose surfaces.

Scandinavian influence

Beyond its mechanical upgrades, the EX30 Cross Country features unique design elements inspired by its Swedish heritage. It reminds us of Polestar's recently unveiled Arctic Circle collection, which sees a fellow Swedish brand equip its EVs with similar off-road equipment.

The front and rear body panels sport a dark grey finish, adding contrast to the compact SUV’s silhouette. A topographic etching of Kebnekaise, Sweden’s highest mountain, adorns the front panel, reinforcing the SUV’s connection to the country’s wild landscapes.

Even the interior door panels incorporate a design resembling native Swedish granite, providing a subtle yet sophisticated link to its origins.

For those wanting a full immersion into the EX30 Cross Country’s world, Volvo is offering a Cross Country Experience package.

This includes incentives on accessories like a roof basket, mud flaps, and all-terrain tyres, as well as an opportunity to book a fully equipped cabin in Swedish Lapland.

Guests who reserve a stay between February 21 and March 21 2025 will find an EX30 Cross Country waiting for them, complete with recommended outdoor activities tailored to the region’s extreme winter conditions.

Expected pricing and availability

Volvo has yet to confirm pricing for the EX30 Cross Country, though it is expected to command a premium over the EX30 Twin Motor Performance, which starts at around $75,000 in New Zealand.

Given the additional off-road equipment and bespoke features, pricing is likely to eclipse any previous EX30 model when it goes on sale later this year.

Production details remain unclear, particularly given Volvo’s recent decision to shift EX30 production for the US market from China to Belgium due to tariff concerns.

While it remains to be seen whether the EX30 CC will be built in the same location, the move could help mitigate import costs and ensure smoother market entry.

With its blend of electric efficiency, rugged capability, and Scandinavian design, the 2026 Volvo EX30 Cross Country is shaping up to be an appealing option for those seeking an adventurous EV.

Whether tackling icy Scandinavian backroads or venturing onto rougher trails, it promises to bring a new dimension to Volvo’s electrified lineup.
