Hyundai has taken a bold step forward in its hydrogen vehicle lineup with the unveiling of the Initium concept SUV, an early look at the replacement for the Nexo.
Set to debut in 2025, this SUV introduces Hyundai’s evolving design language and an improved fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) powertrain, delivering over 650km of range.
Named after the Latin word for 'beginning', the Initium represents Hyundai’s ambition to pioneer hydrogen energy technology.
This concept SUV also presents the 'Art of Steel' design language, which Hyundai says will soon influence production models. Its exterior styling combines boxy LED lighting elements reminiscent of the Ioniq 5 with design cues from the Santa Fe, such as the pronounced skid plates, a rugged C-pillar and inclined rear glass.
The Initium’s wide fender extensions house aero-focused 21-inch wheels and a roof rack with integrated lights adds to its practical appeal.
Recent spy shots hint that the production model will have smaller wheels, standard roof rails and more conventional lighting, suggesting a more subdued appearance when it reaches customers.
While Hyundai has not revealed the Initium’s interior, it promises a spacious, family-oriented cabin.
The second row offers ample legroom and reclining seats for comfort. Additionally, a large rear door opening is designed to make entry and exit easier, especially for families.
Safety is a clear focus, with Hyundai announcing the inclusion of nine airbags and a robust chassis featuring a 'multi-skeleton structure' for added side protection.
The Initium’s fuel cell system marks a significant advancement over the Nexo. It generates 150kW, a notable increase from the Nexo’s 120kW, and achieves a range of 650 km - an upgrade from the previous model’s 612km.
The concept also offers vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, enabling users to power household devices, a practical addition for outdoor adventures.
Hyundai has also addressed one of the biggest challenges for hydrogen vehicles: refuelling.
A new route planner in the Initium’s navigation system helps locate nearby hydrogen refuelling stations, checks station availability, and monitors waiting times, providing a seamless experience for FCEV users.
With the Initium concept set for public display at the Los Angeles Auto Show and Auto Guangzhou in November, the production version’s 2025 debut signals Hyundai’s ongoing commitment to the hydrogen-powered market and puts focus on its intent to lead the future of eco-friendly transportation.
