What were your needs when you bought this car? Has it fulfilled those needs?
Needed a commuter car primarily for myself to cover the 70km round trip to/from work, it is comfortable, practical, has some character, and is surprisingly frugal, so yes has fulfilled the needs I had when purchasing.
What were your initial thoughts about the car? Tell us why it appealed to you.
It was a good size, easy to get in and out of, had some style and character and was not ur average appliance vehicle
What have you discovered since owning the car?
It does all the things I need it to do, and to date have only discovered two issues of concern:
- The ADAS system or Travel Assistance system to use VW terminology, faulted one day and went berserk all the way home. The dealer fixed it under warranty, but every now and then it randomly comes up with a warning advising Travel Assistance System is disabled. Weird and concerning, as the repairs when the dealer repaired it originally were $3500 for a new forward facing camera, and 2 full days labour. Fine while under warranty, not when it isn’t.
- The 1.4 litre engine is surprisingly frugal and it goes well for its size. However, it has an appetite for oil consumption, using around 1 litre every 8000 kms. VW say this is within spec, but I have owned many cars in the past, and NEVER had a near-new car with under 40,000km use oil like this. I do wonder about its longevity.
What do you like/dislike about the car?
What I like is it looks good, does what it does in a fuss free manner and is refined smooth to drive, and has some character.
What I dislike is the glitchy ADAS and the oil consumption, which concerns me about its longevity term viability once the warranty expires
