We've touched on the majesty of the Ferrari Daytona before. Its handsome proportions and distinctive styling ensure its position as my personal favourite from the prancing horse stable.
The last one of these we wrote about was a car firmly embedded in America's fast-paced and glamorous ’70s. This Rosso Chiaro red 1972 365 GTB/4 was also associated with glamour; albeit of a different kind.
One of only 158 ever produced in right-hand drive, it was purchased by a fellow named Elton John in 1973. His stint with the car was short and sweet, selling up two years later in 1975. Wind forward the clock some 42-years later, and it's up for sale again at Silverstone Auctions.
“It is believed that Sir Elton purchased the Daytona off the back of his single success and release of his famed album ‘Goodbye Yellow Brick Road'”, says the auctioneer.
“Ownership history is fully known and has been made up of Ferrari Owners' Club member-owners. The last private collector proudly owned the car for 16 years, garaging and maintaining the vehicle regardless of cost.”
The other difference between this Daytona and the last is its spec. Apart from being right-hand drive, it's also far more conventional in what it's got. There are no big guards and no engine upgrades — rather, it's simply a pristine and clean Daytona.
The V12 has a voice almost as memorable as that of its former owner, and the bodywork is as svelte as it was when it left the showroom floor all those years ago.
Even with 81,675 miles on the clock (131,443 kilometres), this Daytona is expected to fetch NZ$970,000 when it goes up for auction at the Silverstone Classic Sale on July 27–July 30.
