What were your needs when you bought this car? Has it fulfilled those needs?

Needed to be able to tow a small caravan therefore diesel and 4wd. Medium size, safety and comfort and especially low road noise. All of these needs have been fulfilled.

What were your initial thoughts about the car? Tell us why it appealed to you.

It was capable of towing our small caraven. I'd read and heard about good reliability. It looks good. It had lots of safety gear. Cooled seats was a really nice bonus extra. Diesel, and 4WD were what I was looking for, but not a great hulking ute !!

What have you discovered since owning the car?

1. How pleasant and comfortable it is to drive over longer distances. 2. It's a more economical than expected, so that's good. 3. Getting a puncture on the way to catch the Cook Straight ferry with the caravan in tow and then having to empty a full luggage area to get the spare tyre made me realise what a bugger it is getting a heavy wheel out of the back. A spare slung underneath the car would be great. As a result I have learned that the car automatically tells you when a tyre losing pressure. How clever and how useful. I can now check the tyres whilst driving - a very useful feature I didn't know about. 4. I can't play my CD's in the car. The salesman showed me how to use a thumbstick to play my music. 5. How wonderful it is to use the hands free phone. A feature I have for the first time.

What do you like/dislike about the car?

I don't have any dislikes about the car. I love it. It does everything I expected and I'm really pleased with it. I'd buy another, but I think this model looks far nicer than the new one, and besides it has plenty of life left in it. When a Plug-in hybrid Kia Sportage comes along (preferably a diesel) I will look seriously at it. Meantime, it's a PHEV Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross or Outlander in my sights for a replacement some time in the future. My ideal car is an inexpensive electric van capable of towing the caravan, but they are too expensive.

I would like to buy a plug-in hybrid, but Kia don't have a Sportage plug-in hybrid. A plug-in hybrid 5 seater van would be awesome, but they are way too expensive, so as I wish to be able to tow our small caravan, at the moment my only choice seems to be Mitsubishi.

Has it fulfilled those needs? Needed an SUV that could seat 5. Yes definitley has met those needs. We also wanted a high spec SUV. What were your initial thoughts about the car? Tell us why it appealed to you. Reviews by motoring journos plus a 5 year warranty. It also had a good spec for the price. Plus we could get the colour we wanted What have you discovered since owning the car? It’s been great. Good tech spec when it was new. It’s well built and no rattles or squeaks. It’s suited us perfectly and met all our needs What do you like/dislike about the car? Dislike Kia servicing costs, I think one service was $900. Also the factory spec tyres are like $400 a corner to replace. It’s also reasonably thirsty at around 11L per 100K. Other than that we are very happy with it. Any other comments on the car? It’s been a good car and we are buying another Kia shortly to replace it. The spec you can get is way better than a Rav and in my opinion it drives better. Servicing costs are probably on par with any other comparable car so you can’t really complain about that and it’s a bit thirsty round town but that’s probably because it’s AWD
Kia Sportage LX+ Diesel 2020

Has it fulfilled those needs? Was looking for a new car that offered good space, economy, performance and value for money together with a good range of safety features - including adaptive cruise control. The Sportage offered a very good match for what I was looking for and while I hadn't originally been considering a diesel vehicle the additional open road drivability and performance that the diesel offered put it ahead of the petrol variants of the Sportage. What were your initial thoughts about the car? Tell us why it appealed to you. The size/space combination that the Sportage offered was appealing, together with the overall drivability and value. I appreciated the range of safety features, even down to including a full-size spare, on-demand all wheel drive and ease of driving in stop-start traffic that came with the adaptive cruise control. What have you discovered since owning the car? 25,000 kms in and the Sportage still looks, drives and smells like new. Previous new cars that I have owned (Subaru and Suzuki particularly) have shown their age much more quickly. While the SUV height was not something I was particularly looking for the lack of small to mid-size station wagons really limited alternatives, particularly in the price bracket. What do you like/dislike about the car? I have appreciated the effortless performance, particularly on the open road, especially combined with excellent open road fuel economy. The car is comfortable, roomy, reliable and really versatile. After sales service from Waikato Kia has been good and the car continues to meet most of my needs. On the flipside, the SUV height is not great for my ageing dog and the round town fuel economy (at around 8l/100km) is not fantastic - but much better than my previous Subaru. Would be tempted to go hybrid or fully electric next time but would absolutely recommend a Kia Sportage diesel to anyone who needed a versatile, good to drive, reasonably economical vehicle, especially if there needs included a vehicle good at long-distance commuting.

Has it fulfilled those needs? Space, performance, driving aids. Heated/cooled front seats . Overtaking mirror cameras are excellent safety feature. Very nice to drive, very comfortable travel. What were your initial thoughts about the car? Tell us why it appealed to you. Smart looks. Excellent driving aids. Reasonably economic. All of the electronic driving assistance. Great rear tailgate space. Full size spare. What have you discovered since owning the car? Servicing costs excessive. Declined loan car as we work/live too far from service depot. No hourly charge rate shown on invoice. Poor communication at time of servicing. What do you like/dislike about the car? Several computerized aids hard to master. Overall pleased with vehicle. At times trans won't change to suit speed of car on hills. However normal driving is very good. Any other comments on the car? Hope next service arrangements smoother. Auto trans can be fickle, ie occasionally trans won't change gear to suit speed at times.
