Keith Richards’ old Bentley, which carried the Rolling Stones guitarist on ‘many an acid-fuelled journey’, is expected to sell at auction for around NZ$1.4m.

He bought the Bentley S3 Continental Flying Spur new in 1965 when he was 22 and enjoying his first success.

Richards named the limited edition car ‘Blue Lena’ after the singer Lena Horne.

In his autobiography, he wrote: "Blue Lena carried us on many an acid-fuelled journey. Modifications included a secret compartment in the frame for the concealing of illegal substances."

The hellraising rock star began his relationship with Anita Pallenberg in the back seat of the car in 1967 on a trip to Morocco.

In 1976, he crashed the Bentley into a tree after falling asleep at the wheel while driving back from a gig.

There were seven people in the car but none was seriously hurt, according to Richards' son Marlon, who was a passenger at the time.

Richards later said: "Luckily again, that was the Bentley. That car's actually felt quite a bit. Until five or six years ago there was still my bloody handprint on the backseat.

"And on the dashboard there was still a dent where my nose hit it. I was impressed having a dent in the dashboard and disappointed when it was repaired."

He added in his autobiography: "It had a huge bonnet, and to turn it you really had to swing it about. Blue Lena required some art and knowledge of its contours in tight situations - it was six inches wider at the the back than the front.

"You got to know your car, no doubt about that. Three tons of machinery.

"A car that was made to be driven fast at night."

The Bentley, which Richards owned until a couple of years ago, has now been entered into Bonhams' Goodwood Revival Sale on September 12.
