With 2.5-litre four-cylinder and 3.6-litre six-cylinder boxer engine choices, the Gen-6 Legacy continues a familiar formula.

Sharpened pricing has hit the $40K and $50K targets to boost the appeal and Subaru makes arguably the most honest fuel consumption claims of any carmaker. But it was a chance happening that convinced me the Legacy is a class winner.

While driving a 3.6 RS Premium it rained so hard the drops bounced off the road, the intensity enough for the camera-based Eyesight safety system to warn me it could no longer see through the deluge and was temporarily out of action. It’s in the extremes of Kiwi driving conditions where Subaru all- wheel-drive grip and confidence shine.

The other cars I’d be as happy driving in such conditions cost considerably more than $49,990.
