- First XPeng dealership will open in Auckland late-205.
- G6 SUV rivals Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7.
- Brand focused on high-tech, especially AI.
Chinese startup XPeng has confirmed its entry into the New Zealand market with the G6 SUV, a mid-sized electric vehicle that rivals the Tesla Model Y.

XPeng was founded in 2014, so it's only a little older than rival Leapmotor (2015). It claims its speciality is "blending advanced technology with AI-powered innovation, making intelligent driving experiences accessible to a broad range of customers".
It will debut in NZ with a showroom in central Auckand late this year, but head of marketing Damian Royce says there will be a rapid rollout to other key cities in 2026 including Wellington, Christchurch, Tauranga and Hamilton: "New Zealand is a natural launchpad for XPeng’s operation, given its market’s strong focus on innovation, sustainability, and premium driving experiences. These are values that align perfectly with our DNA. We are confident we can deliver world-class service and accelerate EV adoption across the country".
The Auckland location will give customers "direct access to sales, service, and test drive experiences."

The company is yet to share G6 specifications for NZ, but in Australia the brand offers G6 in two models: a standard (66kWh) and long-range (87.5kWh), both single-motor rear-drive.
Royce, who is listed as Australia and NZ marketing manager, told DRIVEN Car Guide that the Kiwi operation "will be independent of the Australian arrangement".

The G6 standard-range gets a 190kW motor, offers 435km on a charge (WLTP) and can sprint to 100km/h in 6.6 seconds. The long range is 210kW, with 570km and 0-100km/h in 6.2sec; peak torque of 440Nm is common to both. So the focus for the top model is much more on maximum range than extra performance.
The two versions also use different battery chemistry. The standard range has an LFP power pack, while the long range uses NMC. They can DC charge at up to 210kW and 280kW respectively.

The G6 is based on XPeng's E/E architecture, which is says is "designed for scalability, high performance, and rapid over-the-air (OTA) updates".
The E/E architecture supports broader AI-driven projects incuding robotics and flying cars, says XPeng: "This modular approach guarantees long-term value with upgradable features, improved energy efficiency, and a focus on safety and sustainability.
No news on G6 pricing yet, but expect it to be sharp against the like of the Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 7. he comapny says it will share more on product and the dealer network "closer to launch".
