Audi A1 turns canvas to promote Aotearoa colouring-in book

The latest trend is colouring-in books for adults but New Zealand artist Shane Hansen has taken it further by creating an automotive version on an Audi A1.

Hansen has launched Native Aotearoa: New Zealand's Colouring Book, that includes artworks from himself and other artists, and he will tour the country over the next two months promoting the book.

To gain attention, Hansen wanted to colour in a car, so approached Audi New Zealand.

"When he introduced us to his concept for an adult colouring book with its Aotearoa focus, and the opportunity to showcase his artwork on one of our vehicles as part of the launch activities, we were very happy to collaborate," said Audi New Zealand's marketing manager Fiona Woolley.

"We're pleased that the Audi A1 Sportback that Shane selected as his canvas is proving ideal for delivery duties and drawing attention to his latest project."

When it came to designing the full body wrap for the A1, Hansen had to consider the dimensions of the Audi hatchback.

"The design for the A1 has been influenced by the colouring book and it took a day to conceive, using recognisable existing artworks," said Hansen.

"To me the design had to work with the style lines of the A1 and creating a sense of movement and rhythm ... the design hints at the idea of colouring-in."

Originally Hansen wanted to create a car that people helped colour in the design but he couldn't get a paint product that would stick on the vinyl so instead opted for the wrap.

Hansen has had "great" reaction to the A1 while driving around Auckland.

"It catches the eye of passers-by, getting the response I was after. A few people have come up and chatted with me and even asked for a pic with it. It's a tidy little package, wrapped in Aotearoa style," he said.

Hansen is promoting the book in galleries around New Zealand and will be parking the A1 outside the stores.
