There's nothing quite like hopping into something properly fast with a baron, straight piece of road in front of you, and pushing the right pedal through the floor.

But on public roads this is obviously naughty and unacceptable behaviour (...), so it's best to leave it to the experts and to closed off pieces of road — experts like the crew at Motor Trend in the US.

For the seventh straight year, the American publication lined up all of their Best Driver's Car nominees for an ultimate drag race. Stars include the world-beating Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, the new Lexus LC 500, the Nissan Nismo GT-R, the Ferrari 488 GTB, and eight other straight-line speed demons.

And, all of them get thrashed, by quite possibly the heaviest car on the grid. But we won't spoil it for you ...

Somewhat disappointingly neither the new Ford GT nor the McLaren 720S showed up. As two of this year's most talked about supercars, you would have expected them to have been invited. The GT's low availability could have been an issue, while the 720S is something of a mystery.

Nonetheless, these videos continue to be a cheerful annual event in the motoring world. I'm already looking forward to the next one.
