Considering how long Nissan's R35 has been in production, it's little surprise to hear countless rumours swirling around the next-generation car and whether it will be electrified or not.

According to Nissan, a replacement has been in the works for the last few years, but a recent interview with the brand's Chief Executive Makoto Uchida hints that the power system is still yet to be decided.

“We are looking at how we can do it electrified,” he said. “It’s something that’s a really professional sports vehicle with no compromise. The Z is for someone like me who enjoys sports cars. The GT-R is a professional machine and we need to work it out for the future.”

The current R35 GT-R is powered by a twin-turbo 3.8-litre V6 engine, and considering that the new Z is using a similar setup, we'd be surprised to see Nissan stray from this tried a true power plant.

Recent versions of this VR38 have produced over 500kW, so with a decent electric motor setup, pumping over 700kW to all four wheels shouldn't be out of the question for the R36.

Though we can expect to see a new design, it seems that Nissan is going to stick with a familiar shape according to the brand's design boss Alfonso Albaisa.

“It doesn’t care what every other supercar in the world is doing,” he said. “It simply says: ‘I’m a GT-R, I’m a brick, catch me.’ It’s the world’s fastest brick, really. And when I review sketches for the new car, I say that a lot: ‘Less wing, more brick.’”
