Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schafer recently put his driving skills to the test against VW R lead engineer Jonas Thielebein in a series of performance challenges.
The lighthearted competition saw the executive behind the wheel of a Golf R Black Edition, while the engineer opted for the Golf R Wagon. The event, captured on video, featured a quarter-mile drag race, a lap-time battle and a drift contest.
Quarter-mile showdown
Both vehicles share the same turbocharged 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder engine, delivering 245kW to all four wheels via a seven-speed DSG and VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.
However, the Golf R Black Edition benefits from a factory-fitted Performance Package, increasing its top speed to 270km/h and giving it a slight weight advantage.
Schafer leveraged this edge in the drag race, crossing the finish line in 13.72 seconds, ahead of Thielebein’s 14.32-second run in the longer and heavier wagon.
Track battle turns the tables
While the CEO had the advantage in straight-line speed, Thielebein dominated on the test track.
Despite not using the Nürburgring drive mode engaged by Schafer, the engineer lapped the course in 1:07.50, a full 4.8 seconds quicker than his boss.
Drifting duel seals outcome
The final challenge saw both drivers attempt to complete the most drifts within a set time.
With the Golf R’s dedicated Drift mode activated, Schafer managed five controlled slides. However, Thielebein outperformed him significantly, executing 14 drifts and earning the unofficial title of "Germany’s Drift King".
Why the wagon had the edge
Though the hatchback is lighter and more agile, the Golf R Wagon’s extended rear overhang (4633mm vs 4284mm for the hatch) likely aided its drifting performance.
The added length shifts more weight to the rear, making it easier to initiate and sustain slides.
This friendly rivalry showcased not just driving skill but also the nuanced differences between the two Golf R variants.
Whether for performance or practicality, VW’s R models continue to offer compelling choices for enthusiasts.
