After a weird and sombre few days of news for American pilots, it's nice to have a good story to balance things out.

The good story comes in the form of a stupendously impressive and risky escape in California, after a pilot reported that his single-engine Cessna 172's fuel pump.

Still yet to be named, the pilot earmarked Highway 580 in San Leandro as a prime spot for an emergency landing — even though it was loaded with 6.45pm traffic. And the spectacular landing was captured in full on dashcam.

Despite the traffic and the Cessna's wing-span crossing almost the entire width of the road, the pilot pulled off the manoeuvre seamlessly without damaging the plane or any of the surrounding cars, let alone injuring any himself, his passenger, or anyone else.

An investigation is now in progress, with the pilot's decision now to come under the microscope — particularly given that he was reportedly less than 10 kilometres away from his destination airport (Hayward Executive Airport).
