Too often the story of the DeLorean — the eccentric but incredibly flawed gullwing supercar of the '80s — begins and ends with flashbacks to Back to the Future and passive aggressive comments about the Peugeot-made boat anchor it utilized as an engine.

There's a ripping extended story in there about one of the brightest minds from Packard then General Motors. At Pontiac, John DeLorean was best known for the creation of the Pontiac GTO — a muscle car that would eventually grow into being a legend of its own.

He climbed through GM's ranks, becoming one of the most well-known (and well paid) names in American motoring — often going against the grain of the company ties along the way. It's a story of twists and turns, and that's well before DeLorean went and started his own self-titled supercar company and his life spiraled out of control.

It was only a matter of time before a film about his life would hit the big screen, and now it's happening with the impending release of Framing John DeLorean — a biopic/documentary hybrid featuring Alec Baldwin as DeLorean.

Check out the film's first full trailer above. It will be released to American audiences on June 7.

Ironically, it's one of two recent movies about the divisive character. The other is called Driven (sound familiar?), which focuses on DeLorean's 1982 cocaine drug bust.
