“It's time to ... and nobody's ever said this before on a car show ... save the world.”
It's that time again; Clarkson, Hammond, and May have a new season of four and two–wheeled hysterics coming soon.
Season one of The Grand Tour met mixed reviews. Some reveled in the return of what was basically Top Gear in a tent, while others cited a lack of progression or adventure in what the boys got up to.
You'll no doubt have your preferred side of the fence, and likewise you probably also know your way around these teaser things by now. So instead of dissecting each detail, I thought it would be better to just lay out my thoughts in a series of randomly ordered bullet points.
• Would it kill the series to use a soundtrack that's from this century
• The Kia Stinger makes one of the briefest cameos, but might be the car I'm most interested to hear a review of. The Chiron, Performante, 720S, and Ford GT .. take a back seat guys
• It isn't looking good for Jaguar fans. The three XJs (are they XJs? I think they are. Maybe?) on snow look like they're unlikely to last the episode without getting destroyed in some fashion, and the closing scene of the trailer features what appears to be a beautiful XK convertible falling off a cliff
• Speaking of cars getting wrecked, is that a 'hawkeye' Subaru Impreza WRX STI getting jumped into a bank? Sad
• James Hammond falling off a motorbike may well be The Grand Tour's equivalent of Hans Moleman's 'Man Getting Hit by Football'
• Some nice old cars in there, including the Lancia 037 Group B beast, Bugatti EB110, and Jaguar XJ220. Bit of luck the latter isn't put through a giant paper shredder or fed to a pool of piranhas or some other equally daft option
• Production value is as high as ever. The slo-mo shots remain sumptuous and the shots of cars crisply spliced together
• • That thingy that does a wheelie on the sand. I want one. Plus a large body of sand
