Supercar owner drives brand new Audi R8 into river in the Netherlands
No group of people in the automotive community comes under as much scrutiny as the group who are fortunate enough to own supercars.
In New Zealand without question some of that silliness stems from our familiar old friend tall poppy syndrome, where we hate those with bigger shinier toys than us largely out of jealousy.
But also, supercar owners tend to also come under scrutiny for their ability to drive — or supposed lack thereof.
There are countless examples of actors, famed athletes, and prolific businessmen all binning their high-powered pieces of art into ditches and fences. Hell, New Zealand had its own taste of the solution late last year when a McLaren F1 bit the dust near Queenstown.
And this latest story out of the Netherlands does nothing for the stereotype; a story that sees man from Germany and his brand-spanking new Audi R8 V10 Plus both involuntarily made a sudden visit to the depths of the Angstel River between Abcoude and Loenersloot (didn't make those names up. Feel free to check on Google).
Quite naturally details are thin around how any of this happened, with the video stating that police said a "wrong steering maneuver" was the cause. Whether that means that the driver was power-sliding out of a side road or trying to swat away a fly in the cabin, we do not know. He was
What we do know is that this car is probably not going to see much road for a while, at least without some incredibly comprehensive repairs. While there's barely any visual damage to the outside of the thing, there's likely to be a sea of issues (see what I did there?) internally, where water has crept into places that it's simply not meant to be.
Hopefully someone in this narrative learned something. As optimistic as that is.
