Volvo has fired a hefty salvo into the electric SUV space, previewing its upcoming EX60 with claims that will make range-anxious drivers sit up straight.

When it’s officially revealed later this month, the all-electric EX60 will headline with a "best-in-class" 810km driving range and ultra-rapid charging that Volvo likens to the time it takes to refuel and grab a coffee.

The headline number is hard to ignore. In all-wheel-drive form, the EX60 is rated for up to 810km on a single charge under WLTP testing, comfortably the longest-range electric Volvo ever produced, and claimed to outgun recently revealed rivals.

Volvo says this isn’t about laboratory bragging rights alone. Engineers focused on “real-life driving” efficiency, aiming to turn EV ownership from compromise into convenience.

Anders Bell, Volvo Cars’ Chief Technology Officer, calls the EX60 “a gamechanger”, adding: “With our new electric vehicle architecture, we directly address the main worries that customers have when considering a switch to a fully electric car… marking the end of range anxiety”.

If the range headline grabs attention, the charging claim seals the deal. Using a 400kW DC fast charger, the EX60 can add up to 340km of range in just 10 minutes. Volvo says that makes a charging stop “nearly as fast as a fuel stop” - a bold comparison, but one increasingly plausible as high-power chargers roll out .

An all-weather focus is key here. Volvo claims the EX60 charges faster than any previous electric Volvo regardless of conditions, backed by a 10-year battery warranty for added peace of mind.

The technical backbone is Volvo’s new SPA3 electric architecture, making its debut in the EX60. It integrates the battery directly into the vehicle structure using cell-to-body technology, trims weight, and boosts efficiency.

Volvo has also developed its electric motors in-house and introduced mega casting, replacing hundreds of smaller components with single high-precision castings to further cut mass and complexity .

An 800V electrical system, combined with in-house software and adaptive battery algorithms from Breathe Battery Technologies, manages heat and power flow to keep charging speeds consistently high.

Volvo will fully unveil the EX60 on January 21, with details on outputs, pricing and local availability still under wraps. If the numbers stack up in the real world, the EX60 could reset expectations for long-distance electric SUVs.
