Volvo has confirmed that its all-new fully electric flagship sedan, the ES90, will make its global debut on March 5.
The software-heavy luxury sedan will be the most advanced model in Volvo’s lineup, boasting industry-leading computing power, the brand’s longest electric range and the fastest charging speeds. The majority of this tech is also expected to expand to Volvo's upcoming model lineup.
Alongside the ES90, Volvo is also preparing a facelifted version of its petrol-powered S90, ensuring an internal combustion engine (ICE) option remains available.
Distinct design with split taillights
New teaser images of the ES90 highlight a distinctive split-taillight design. While maintaining a traditional sedan silhouette, the electric model introduces additional LED strips positioned at the sides of the rear window, complementing the main taillights.
Other design cues include a sleek, aerodynamic roofline, flush door handles and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, reinforcing Volvo’s focus on advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
Up front, the ES90 is expected to adopt the EX90’s design language, including Volvo’s signature 'Thor’s hammer' LED headlights.
700km range and ultra-fast charging
Built on Volvo’s SPA2 platform, the ES90 will utilise an 800V electrical architecture, significantly improving range and charging capabilities.
Volvo has confirmed a WLTP-rated driving range exceeding 700km, making it the longest-range model in the brand’s EV lineup.
The ES90’s battery supports 350kW ultra-fast charging, allowing it to add 300km of range in just 10 minutes.
A 10-80% charge will be achievable in 20 minutes, aided by new battery management software. While specific motor details remain undisclosed, Volvo has confirmed that the power units will be lighter and more efficient.
High-performance computing and AI
Volvo’s upcoming EV will be the first to feature a dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin processor setup, delivering the highest computing power in any Volvo to date. This system will also be rolled out to the EX90, with existing owners set to receive a complimentary upgrade.
The ES90 will be equipped with an extensive sensor suite, including LiDAR, five radars, eight cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors.
Inside, an advanced driver monitoring system will enhance Volvo’s 'Safe Space Technology', further strengthening its active safety credentials.Over-the-air (OTA) updates will ensure the ES90 continuously improves in performance, connectivity and safety.
Sustainability focus
Volvo is emphasising sustainability in the ES90’s production, incorporating recycled and natural materials throughout the vehicle.
Additionally, the company has pledged full transparency regarding the sourcing of rare metals used in the battery pack and the overall carbon footprint of the model.
Volvo S90 facelift extends ICE sedan’s lifespan
While Volvo is expanding its electric lineup, the internal combustion-powered S90 will receive a significant facelift.
Spy images suggest a refreshed design with a reworked front and rear, keeping the model competitive in an evolving market. This update aligns with Volvo’s strategy of maintaining ICE options alongside EVs, following its decision to move away from an all-electric-only goal by 2030.
The fate of the V90 estate remains unclear, but Volvo has confirmed that two existing models will receive "meaningful upgrades” in 2025.
Given the recently updated XC60, the S90 is set to be one of them. This approach mirrors Volvo’s decision to keep the XC90 SUV available alongside its electric successor, the EX90.
The future of Volvo’s sedan lineup
With the ES90 leading Volvo’s electric ambitions and the facelifted S90 extending the lifecycle of its ICE offerings, the brand is covering both ends of the spectrum. As Volvo moves towards a more balanced approach between EVs and traditional powertrains, the ES90 is set to be a game-changer in the luxury electric sedan market.
