Volvo has lifted the covers on its latest fully electric model, the ES90. Blurring the lines between sedan, fastback and SUV, the ES90 brings a high-riding stance with a sleek profile, delivering a new take on premium electric mobility.

“The Volvo ES90 combines our most advanced technologies with Scandinavian design and superior comfort,” says Volvo CEO Jim Rowan. “It joins the EX90 SUV as one of our flagship models and cements our position as an industry leader in software-defined cars.”

Built on Volvo’s advanced SPA2 platform, the ES90 is the first model in the lineup to feature 800V charging technology, allowing for ultra-fast top-ups.

At a 350kW charging station, the ES90 can gain 300km of range in just 10 minutes. Under the WLTP testing cycle, the vehicle boasts an impressive maximum driving range of up to 700km.

Volvo has integrated dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin chips for more core computing power, significantly enhancing safety and driving performance through real-time data processing.

“The ES90 is the most powerful car we have ever created in terms of core computing capacity,” explains Anders Bell, Volvo’s Chief Engineering and Technology Officer.

Inside, the ES90 prioritises space, comfort and functionality. With a long 3.1m wheelbase, second-row passengers enjoy ample legroom.

The cabin features six ambient lighting themes, a panoramic roof with electrochromic glass and Volvo’s four-zone climate control system equipped with an advanced air purifier.

The infotainment system includes Google built-in, powered by a Snapdragon Cockpit Platform, and is displayed through a 14.5-inch centre screen. A high-fidelity Bowers & Wilkins sound system with 25 speakers and Dolby Atmos further enhances the in-cabin experience.

High-tech safety

As expected from Volvo, safety is a priority. The ES90 comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of sensors, including radars, cameras, ultrasonic sensors and a Luminar LiDAR system.

Volvo says its driver-understanding system detects when the driver loses focus and intervenes when necessary. Additionally, an occupant sensing system prevents unintentional lock-ins, capable of detecting submillimetre movements such as a sleeping child.

As the sixth fully electric model in Volvo’s lineup, the new ES90 shows the automaker is serious about electrification and technical advancement. Volvo previously announced five new models for 2025, with the EX30 Cross Country and new XC60 debuting ahead of the ES90.

The Volvo ES90 is available for order in various European markets, with further expansion expected into 2026. Volvo New Zealand says it has no current plans to bring the new electric SUV into market, although that can reportedly change based on consumer demand. The ES90 starts at £69,650 in the UK (below NZ$160,000).
