For a long time, Volkswagen's Golf was the only model in the line-up to wear the R badge, but come 2022, it's going to be a lot more common across the range, and we're here for it.
Volkswagen New Zealand will be introducing a total of four new R models including the eighth-generation Golf next year, the others include the Tiguan R, the T-Roc R, and the big Toureg R PHEV.

It's fair to say that enthusiasts will be most excited about the return of the Golf R to New Zealand, with the new model packing more power and dynamic driving tech than ever.
Starting at $76,990, this Golf R pumps out an impressive 235kW and 400Nm, which is sent to all four wheel through the new 4Motion system. It not only gets torque vectoring, but also a very exciting drift mode.
Serving as the bigger sibling to the Golf R, the Tiguan R starts at $79,990, and gets the same underpinnings as the Golf.
Buyers wanting some Golf-related exclusivity can opt for the 1st Edition, but that spec is still yet to be confirmed. It seems that the Nurburgring edition of the R will be exclusive to this 1st Edition.
If a new Golf R is what you're after, you might have to jump in quick, as Volkswagen New Zealand general manager Greg Leet stated that 70 per cent of the local allocation has already been pre-sold.
As for the larger two R models, local pricing and specification is still yet to be confirmed.
