- Volkswagen has unveiled the ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice special edition, delivering 240kW and zero emissions.
- Production is limited to 1990 units, marking a tribute to the 1990 Golf Fire & Ice.
- The model was developed with Bogner Fire+Ice and launched alongside a new track by Purple Disco Machine.
Volkswagen is reviving one of its most cultish nameplates with an electric twist.
The new ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice is a limited-run homage to the 1990 Golf 2 Fire & Ice, itself inspired by Willy Bogner’s 1986 ski film Fire and Ice.
That movie (and its violet-painted Golf spin-off) cemented a moment when stunts, style and soundtracks collided. Now Wolfsburg’s EV division wants that same energy for the streaming age.
Fashion meets fast-charging
Built in collaboration with Munich-based performance sportswear label Bogner Fire+Ice, the ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice pairs exclusive paintwork with bespoke trim details and a punchy electric drivetrain rated at 240kW.
Only 1990 examples will be made, mirroring the year the original Golf Fire & Ice launched. Expect the usual GTX performance tweaks but with plenty of nostalgia baked in, from retro-inspired badging to a colour palette nodding at the dark-violet pearl of its predecessor.
Purple Disco Machine on repeat
The marketing push is as much about ears as eyes. Volkswagen commissioned Grammy-winning DJ Purple Disco Machine and Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears to rework Marietta Waters and Harold Faltermeyer’s original theme song.
Their new track “Fire + Ice” has already notched more than a million streams within days of release. The accompanying music video splices together fresh stunts of the ID.3 GTX with archive nods to the Golf 2, showing how a cult car morphs into an electric era hero without losing its swagger.
Volkswagen’s Chief Brand Officer Christine Wolburg says the project is about “bringing back into the spotlight” the lifestyle the marque once represented and anchoring it in today’s pop culture. With limited numbers, a strong fashion tie-in and a ready-made soundtrack, the ID.3 GTX Fire+Ice looks set to become more than just another trim level - think of it as an electrified collector’s item with a built-in dance beat.
