Can a child's drawing make a parent a safer driver? Volkswagen New Zealand decided to find out as part of the Road Safety Week by installing a customised dial.

VW NZ has just launched the Reduce Speed Dial, a controlled experiment where four families were supplied with specially adapted Volkswagen Golf hatchbacks, with the idea sparking world-wide interest and coverage from some of the World's biggest news sites - including the MailOnline.

Unbeknown to the parents, a replacement panel was created by their children for the speedo. They followed all of the clarity and safety restrictions of a standard speedo, but using a specially designed APP, the dial was personally hand drawn by one of their children.

The experiment is aiming to disrupt the temptation to speed by reminding parents what they have to live for at the exact moment they consider speeding.

The early results have shown that the special dial has reduced the speed in half of the drivers’ maximum speed, three of the four parents had reduced their speeding in 100km zone by 50 per cent and one family reduced their top speed by 19km/h from a max of 123km to a max of 104.

Road Safety Week is from May 4-10.
