The global stories of manufacturing woe are plentiful in places like the UK and now Australia. And Detroit, in a way, is part of that story.
Yes, several manufacturers including America's 'Big Three' still operate there. But huge cuts and job losses spread over the last few decades have left the city reeling in unemployment.
But, some joy is on the horizon for the embattled Detroit, as for the first time in more than 25 years a new car factory is set to be built in its limits.
It will cover approximately 37,000 square meters, and build SUVs in the main according to reports with the plans set to be revealed at a US press conference on the 20th of this month.
Nope, it's not a Ford factory or a Chevrolet factory. It's going to be a Mahindra factory — as confirmed by the manufacturer themselves late last week.
The Indian manufacturer have been trying to crack into the American motoring market for some years now, and appear on the cusp of making their biggest move yet later this month.
It isn't yet known when building will commence or when it's expected to be completed.
It's not the first time Mahindra has tried to break into the US. In fact, they've been pushing for more than 10 years. They were close in the early noughties, only for US dealers to accuse them of fraudulent business practices and nicking trade secrets, triggering a messy litigation process.
While perhaps those same groups might rally against this new campaign, the city of Detroit would probably welcome them and their jobs with open arms.
