Orders are open for a power-boosted Kia Optima
A third choice has been added to the Kia Optima line-up in New Zealand with the availability of a limited supply of turbocharged GT models.
The Optima GT with a 2.0-litre turbo engine joins the EX and Limited models, which are powered by a 2.4-litre direct injected petrol engine. The turbo engine brings a significant performance boost with 180kW output and 350Nm of torque.
Recommended retail pricing is $53,990 (plus on road costs), which positions the Optima GT at a $5000 premium above the Limited model. Kia Motors New Zealand says the Optima GT is available on indent order only.
"It's a very exciting car and although it competes in a niche area of the market, our research indicates there is demand for this type of vehicle," said Todd McDonald, general manager of Kia Motors New Zealand.
"The performance and equipment levels in the Optima GT make it a compelling proposition at a very competitive price."
The Optima GT engine features a high-efficiency twin-scroll turbocharger and dual continuously variable valve timing technology, while the six-speed automatic transmission has been recalibrated and offers sequential manual gearing.
The Optima GT can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.4 seconds and its top speed is 240km/h.
The suspension is fitted with high-performance dampers to provide a slightly firmer and sportier ride while the Optima GT also gets a rack-mounted power steering system (R-MDPS), which differs from the motor-driven power steering system (MDPS) fitted to the 2.4-litre models.
Mounted directly on the steering rack -- rather than on the column -- the R-MDPS system provides quicker and more linear steering response. Another upgrade is the 235/45 R18 Michelin Pilot Sport3 tyres mounted to unique 18-inch GT alloy wheels.
Externally, the new Kia Optima GT features a more aggressive front bumper design, black high-gloss side sills, a subtle rear air diffuser with integrated dual tailpipes, red brake callipers and GT badging.
The cabin boasts black leather seats with red stitching, a GT logo stitched into the back of the seats and a GT badge on the flat-bottom steering wheel. There's also a sports instrument cluster.
The touchscreen infotainment system features an 8-inch screen with satellite navigation, reversing camera and Bluetooth hands-free capability. There is a 590-watt Harman Kardon premium sound system with 10 speakers, an external amplifier and Clari-Fi MP3 restoration technology.
Also standard is a wireless charger for mobile devices and a hands-free boot-opening function for ease of use when the driver's hands are full.
The latest generation Optima has gained a five-star Ancap safety rating (2016) and its suite of technologies to avoid or mitigate the effects of a collision include Advanced Smart Cruise Control (ASCC), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and High Beam Assist (HBA), which automatically adjusts headlamp range according to other vehicles and road conditions.
Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) will detect a vehicle in front slowing and automatically apply the brakes to avoid a collision while Blind Spot Detection (BSD) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) are also standard.
The GT also has an active LED headlight system, which tracks steering to sweep the road ahead for greater visibility and improved safety at night.
The Optima GT is available on indent order at participating dealers only.
