Mitsubishi New Zealand sold 445 Triton utes last month, grabbing second place in the ute segment of the market.

The company enjoyed strong sales with the first full shipment of new Triton models, along with a continuing run-out campaign of the previous model.

The Triton helped push the Toyota Hilux into third place, with both models behind the Ford Ranger as the best selling ute in the market during January.

Overall Mitsubishi New Zealand saw 1248 vehicles registered during January, its biggest January since 1986. The sales meant Mitsubishi was in third place overall, with 9.3 per cent market share.

The sales came ahead of a launch event where more than 300 customers and dealers put the new Triton to the test on Wellington's rugged south coast.

“The overwhelmingly positive reaction at our launch event has been pre-empted by a surge in Triton sales from new and old fans alike across the country,” said Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs Reece Congdon.

He said the performance and safety upgrades delivered at a sharp price made Triton the most compelling package in the ute segment.

“The arrival of the new-look Triton has no doubt boosted sales, contributing to our biggest January in more than 30 years,” he said.

With 1,248 sales and 9.3% total market share, the booming start to the year drove the brand into third position overall.

“Our next goal is to secure third place in the market for the financial year,” said Congdon. “This result suggests we are heading firmly in the right direction.”
