With potential design changes on the horizon, the GR Supra’s journey appears far from over

Toyota has all but reassured enthusiasts that the beloved GR Supra sports car is here to stay, even as its sibling, the BMW Z4, faces an uncertain future.

While recent reports suggested both models might cease production by 2026, Toyota has indicated its plans for the Supra are independent of BMW's decisions.

Toyota Australia’s Vice President of Sales, Sean Hanley, put those rumours to rest, stating that the Supra will not be axed anytime soon.

“There is no plan to discontinue the Supra brand in this car company. I know that,” Hanley confirmed, suggesting that any decisions regarding the Z4 have no bearing on the Supra's future.

He continued, “The notion that Supra is stopping is purely speculative, and quite frankly, I have no expectation, sitting here today, that the Supra brand will disappear.”

The current-generation GR Supra, which shares a platform with the Z4, has carved out a distinct identity within Toyota's lineup.

The company recently revealed a V8-powered version of the Supra that will compete in Australia's Supercars Championship from 2026.

While this high-performance variant may outlive the current road model, Hanley underlined the car’s significance as a brand icon. “Quite frankly, I can tell you the car you saw today will be on this track for years... There is a lot of legacy there. It is an incredibly important brand,” Hanley told CarExpert during the V8 Supra reveal.

Looking to the future, Hanley hinted at potential changes in the Supra’s design. “It might change, it might morph, shape-wise,” he teased, leaving fans to speculate on what this evolution might entail.

Regardless of its eventual form, the GR Supra is set to continue playing a crucial role in Toyota’s performance lineup.
