The Toyota Corolla regained its position as the top-selling passenger car last month, as the motor industry enjoyed yet another month of record sales.
There were 11,180 new vehicles sold during May, which was the strongest number of sales during May since the Motor Industry Association began collating sales data in 1975.
Vehicle registrations last month were up more than 11 per cent over May last year.
The association’s chief executive, David Crawford said strong net immigration and Auckland’s booming regional economy contributed to the strong sales figures.
“There were 7502 passenger vehicle registrations and 3678 commercial vehicle registrations, which were once again the highest month of May on record for commercial vehicle registrations” he said.

Toyota was the overall market leader during May with 16 per cent market share (1753 units). Ford was second on 14 per cent (1511) and Holden third with 10 per cent (1088).
Toyota remains the passenger car market leader for the month of May with 13 per cent share (965 units), with Ford second on 9 per cent (697) and Holden third with 9 per cent (677). Ford was the commercial vehicle market leader with 22 per cent share (814 units) followed by Toyota at 21 per cent (788) and Holden third.
The Toyota Corolla regained its position as the top-selling passenger model with 4 per cent market share (323 units) followed by the Toyota RAV4 on 3 per cent (249) and the Mazda CX-5 also on 3 per cent (246).
The Ford Ranger regained its position as the monthly top-selling commercial model for May with 21 per cent market share (755 units) and was also the top selling model overall during May.
The Toyota Hilux was second-best with 16 per cent market share (573 units) with the Holden Colorado at 10 per cent (382). Year-to-date the Ford Ranger retains its lead as the top-selling commercial model with 19 per cent market share followed by the Toyota Hilux, with 15 per cent.
