Toyota is stirring rumours with word of a groundbreaking new 2.0-litre turbocharged engine.
Rumours out of Japan suggest this powerhouse could potentially deliver a staggering 441kW in its full-fledged racing trim.
And if that's not enough to make petrolheads drool, consider this – all that power without any electrification assistance.
More than just a track star
While the racing variant is sure to grab headlines, Toyota's got plans beyond the track.
Sources indicate a high-performance road version is in the works, boasting a still-impressive 294kW and a hefty 550Nm of torque. Even the base model of this new engine should keep up, reportedly targeting 221kW and 400 Nm of torque.
The return of legends?

Japanese publication Best Car reports that this ferocious 2.0-litre could find its way under the bonnet of a revived Toyota MR2, particularly in a rumoured GRMN flagship model with a mid-engined layout and 4WD. There's even chatter of this engine powering a reborn Celica, potentially as a front-engined, two-door coupe.
Toyota's vision for the future
While these remain tantalising rumours, Toyota has confirmed its commitment to developing new 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines.
The automaker has emphasised a focus on efficiency, power and hybrid compatibility. The new 2.0-litre turbo, in particular, is slated to outmuscle its current 2.4-litre turbo in both power and fuel efficiency.
Importantly, Toyota is ensuring this engine will meet global emissions standards, and its compatibility with carbon-neutral fuels suggests it could remain relevant well into the future.
