- New FWD and PHEV models feature.
- GR Sport joins RAV4 range for the first time.
Toyota New Zealand has announced pricing for its brand-new sixth-generation RAV4 lineup, set to go on sale "in the first half of the year".
As expected, the stickers have all increased, although it's impossible to quantify new-versus-old in too much detail: the model and powertrain mix has changed substantially, with the introduction of new FWD and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions, plus the addition of a GR Sport flagship model for the first time.
However, the RAV4 Hybrid AWD formerly started at $48,790 and topped out at $60,990. The new model opens at $49,990 and runs right through to $66,990. See below for the full list of models and prices.
All models have the latest Toyota Safety Sense package. A significant addition is an Emergency Driving Stop System which triggers an SOS emergency call, slowing and stopping the vehicle if the driver becomes unresponsive.
RAV4 will also be the first Toyota in NZ to feature Toyota Connected Services and link to the driver’s mobile device via the "myToyota" app, providing a range of safety, security and convenience features such as SOS emergency call, automatic collision notification, stolen vehicle tracking and remote locking, climate control and vehicle status information.
Toyota NZ says there will be two key decisions for the potential RAV4 buyers: FWD or AWD (the previous hybrid was AWD only) and hybrid or PHEV.
These powertrain features are spread across Core, Adventure and GR Sport "styles". Core comes as FWD or AWD and HEV or PHEV, Adventure is AWD and HEV only, while GR Sport which is both AWD and PHEV.
All hybrid grades have a fifth-generation hybrid system with a 2.5-litre petrol engine and lithium-ion battery that produces a total system output of 143kW. The GXL PHEV produces 201kW total system output, while the GR Sport PHEV makes 227kW.
The RAV4 Core
Each style has a distinctive front grille design and a unique wheel design. Toyota expects the Core to appeal to both private and fleet buyers. Within Core are a range of grades from the entry-level GX to the GXL, XSE and Limited.

Stepping up from the GX to the GXL, there's range of extras such as Qi wireless device charger, rain sensing front wipers and 18-inch dark grey alloy wheels.
The XSE (PHEV only) will be the only sixth-generation model to offer a two-tone colour exterior paint scheme, with five options of an Ebony roof matched with Frosted White, Avant-Garde Bronze, Massive Grey, Deep Sea Blue or Emotional Red.
The Limited (HEV only) adds an adaptive high beam system, Panoramic View Monitor, JBL premium audio system, leather-accented upholstery and a Panoramic Moon Roof. The Limited also rides on bigger wheels – 20-inch black and machined alloys – shod with lower profile tyres.
The RAV4 Adventure
The RAV4 Adventure (HEV only) is more 4x4-themed, with unique large over-fenders. It wears angular bridge roof rails and 18-inch matte grey alloy wheels.
Inside, the Adventure has extra illuminated entry and back door LED lights. It features harder wearing synthetic leather seat material in either black or mineral and front seat heaters.
The Adventure and Limited HEV models now feature a redesigned seat with a wider base and enhanced back support.
The RAV4 GR Sport
Toyota claims an additional 70,000 hours of engineering development went into the design and development of the first-ever RAV4 GR Sport.
As the new flagship, the GR Sport will be offered exclusively with a PHEV AWD powertrain, its sixth-generation 2.5-litre hybrid system, 22.7kWh lithium-ion battery, and front and rear electric motors generating a total system output of 227kW, making it the most powerful RAV4 to date.
All PHEV grades include a 1500 watt plug capable of powering small appliances.
The GR Sport wears unique 20-inch black machined alloy wheels. Each wheel is 2.2kg lighter than the equivalent sized 20-inch wheel on the XSE and Limited.
The GR Sport employs different dampers, a stiffer rear suspension brace, retuned suspension and power steering calibration, and a 20mm-wider wheel track.
The interior features include aluminium sports pedals, plus synthetic leather and Brin Naub® microsuede accented seats. It has an exclusive steering wheel with the GR logo, soft padded knee pads, GR Sport branded front scuff plates, paddle shifters and unique interior stitching alongside red brake calipers with the GR logo.
